about

Peculiar, perplexing -- but never perfunctory! -- explorations into the surreal margins of the electric violin and viola, generating a hypnotic, insistent trance-ambient sound that exploits Petros Amadeos Xristos' unique system of stochastic intonation.

Hollywood-based (and occasionally itinerant) "guru to the stars" Petros Amadeos Xristos has, for over twenty years, endeavored to "eWaken" people to the raw wonder and strangeness of the reality we live in through both sound and silence. Turning his attention to the stranger spheres of avant-garde and experimental sounds, Petros endeavors to modulate and manipulate aural frequencies through his currently favored "machine," the electric violin (occasionally strung as a viola with C-G-D-A strings). The aim? "Changing the way we hear, changing the way we absorb the world ... and how we place ourselves within it."

Sometimes evoking the experiments of John Cage and La Monte Young (Petros' innovative "stochastic intonation" insures that even once familiar notes become defamiliarized, bent, twisted into surreal realms), sometimes broaching the trancelike ambience of modern masters as disparate as Gyorgi Ligeti, street musician Moondog, or John Cale (whose screeching electric viola on the debut Velvet Underground album was an early inspiration to Petros), "The P.E.T.R.O.S. Project" (Pure Enlightening Transcendental Realization Of Spirit -- though sometimes the acronym words will change) promises nothing familiar, nothing sure, nothing predictable -- but guarantees unending quest, unending evolution; sound beyond music, music beyond sound.

Petros once remarked, "If you can't make music, make ambient music; if you can't make ambient music, make experimental music." Was he serious or facetious? Was he simply high at the time? One never can tell. In the end, maybe it doesn't matter.
